Pinyin in Chinese
Pinyin is an essential tool for learning and understanding the pronunciation of Chinese characters and standard Mandarin. Components of Pinyin
Each Chinese Character Pinyin consists of only one syllable of up to three components: (an initial) + a final + a tone. The final sometimes has a head, also called a "medial" before its base.

Tones
There are 5 tones in total, with the first, second, third, fourth tones marked on the main initials, such as (妈, ), (麻, ), (马, ), (骂, ). The neutral tone is not marked, such as (吗, ).
Tone rules
If the first vowel letter is a, o, e, the tone is marked on the first vowel letter. For example: (太, ), (手, ), (北, ).
If the first vowel letter is i, u, ü, the tone is marked on the vowel letter immediately following it. For example: (铁, ), (跳, ), (推, ), (关, ), (略, ), (卷, ).
